650
research projects funded
€30
million invested since 1989
Every year we fund the researchers and clinicians working on tomorrow’s treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis, osteoarthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and lupus, so that these diseases are diagnosed earlier, treated better, and one day cured.
We are the leading private funder of research into rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) in France.
More than 200 diseases. One person in five.
Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases are a group of over 200 conditions that affect the joints, but also the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and internal organs. They affect around 20% of the population, at every age. They can begin in childhood or early adulthood, which means patients often live with them for decades, with pain, loss of mobility, fatigue and the social isolation that follows.
They are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. In research funding terms, they remain chronically overlooked.
A private foundation with a public-interest mission
The Fondation Arthritis was created in 1989 and recognised as a public-interest foundation by French State decree in 2006. We do not pursue an agenda of our own: we identify the most promising research being done in France, we fund it, and we measure what it changes for patients.
Our particular focus is translational research, the work that turns a laboratory finding into clinical evidence, and clinical evidence into a treatment. It is the slowest, least visible and least funded part of the chain. It is also where a foundation of our size makes the most difference.
“The Fondation Arthritis is devoted to ambitions that have always motivated me. My career as an orthopaedic surgeon and my fascination with science take concrete form in the Foundation’s initiatives. My ambitions are clear: helping to heal chronic inflammatory rheumatism, working to promote the osteoarticular field as a whole, creating lasting links between different fields within rheumatology to boost innovation, and raising awareness of the reality of these terribly disabling diseases, which affect patients of all ages, and even the very young.”
Dr Olivier Courtin-Clarins, Chairman of the Fondation Arthritis
Where your donation goes
Every project we fund is selected through an open call and assessed by an independent Scientific Council of twelve members, eight non-clinician researchers and four clinicians, none of whom can fund their own work. We support four programmes:
What this research has already changed
Research funded by the Fondation Arthritis contributed to the emergence of biotherapies, which changed the outlook for people living with chronic inflammatory rheumatism. It produced an animal model of rheumatoid arthritis now used by laboratories worldwide. And it contributed to the discovery of ACPA, autoantibodies specific to rheumatoid arthritis, which led to diagnostic tests of unprecedented accuracy and to earlier treatment for thousands of patients.
These are not promises. They are results, and they came from grants that were, at the time, modest.
Why 100% of your donation goes to our missions
Thanks to the Courtin family and the in-kind sponsorship of the Clarins group, the Foundation’s running costs (premises, IT, postage and the salaries of the permanent team) are covered independently of public donations. Every euro given by an individual donor goes to the Foundation’s missions.
Our 2030 ambition
- Cure rheumatoid arthritis.
- Significantly reduce joint pain across all rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.
- Become the French reference for scientific information on RMDs, for patients, researchers and the public.

Give as an individual
Every euro given by an individual donor goes to the Foundation’s missions. You can give once, or set up a monthly gift.
One thing to know before you start: our secure donation form is currently available in French only. It takes about two minutes, and here is what each step asks for.
- One-off gift / Monthly gift: a one-off gift, or a monthly gift.
- Amount / Other amount: the suggested amounts, or your own.
- Your details: your name, email and postal address. The postal address is needed to issue your receipt.
- Payment method: bank card, PayPal or instant bank transfer. International cards are accepted.
- Confirm my donation: confirm and pay.
If you pay income tax in France, your donation is 66% tax-deductible within the legal limits: a €100 gift costs you €34, and a tax receipt is issued for every donation. If you are not a French taxpayer you are very welcome to give, and the form accepts international cards, but no French tax relief applies to your gift and the Foundation does not currently take part in a cross-border giving scheme.
